Too much stretching can destabilize your spine.
Think of your muscles like the cables holding up a tent.
When those cables are strong and balanced, the tent stands tall.
But if you loosen them too much, the whole structure sags.
That’s what happens to your spine when you overstretch.
Your muscles lose their tension, your joints start to wobble, and your core stops doing its job.
The result?
Pain, weakness, and that constant feeling like your back could “go out” at any time.
I learned this lesson the hard way.
Years ago, I followed every traditional yoga cue — “deepen,” “soften,” “melt.”
It felt relaxing … until my back seized up so badly I could barely roll out of bed.
But the more I stretched, the worse it got.
That’s when I realized the invisible threat: instability disguised as flexibility.
When I stopped trying to “open up” and started focusing on building strength and control, everything changed.
My pain dropped.
My confidence returned.
And eventually, that discovery became the foundation for Functional Yoga Instruction — a method that helps people move safely and confidently again without stretching themselves into pain.
