I wonder if Charlie Chaplin had sciatica? …
It’s a weird question but It’ll make sense in a moment.
I often get asked, “What’s a good stretch for sciatica?”
It’s a fair question because most folks are looking for a yoga pose that can bring them relief. The truth is some yoga poses may or may not help with sciatica [and may or may not be accessible to most people].
It can present quite a conundrum.
However … there is a simple solution.
It may not get you very many likes on Insta, but it can definitely help relieve symptoms of sciatica. Did I mention most anyone can do it?
It’s called Mountain Pose.

Here’s how Mountain Pose can help you break from sciatica pain …
Many of us unknowingly adopt a Charlie Chaplin-like stance in our daily lives, contributing to the tightening of the piriformis muscle.
The “Charlie Chapin” stance is when you stand (or sit … or walk … or run) with your knees turned out. It’s called external rotation of the femurs.
This habitual pattern keeps the deep gluteal muscles tight. This tightness places undue pressure on the sciatic nerve, creating a breeding ground for discomfort.
That’s the beauty of Mountain Pose … it teaches us to stand with our leg bones in a position that does not aggravate our sciatica symptoms because you stand with your knees pointed forward.
This forward position of the knees helps take the tension out of the gluteal muscles. This removes the tension on the sciatic nerve and that brings relief from the burning sensations of sciatica.
Not only is it effective but it is also accessible for the everyday person (especially those who are in pain from sciatica).
Integrating Mountain Pose into your daily routine offers a sustainable, long-term solution to counteract the adverse effects of poor posture and a sedentary lifestyle.
Instead of looking for the best stretch … try un-doing the things you are doing daily to aggravate your sciatica.
For example …
The next time you’re standing somewhere (in line at the grocery store, at the post office, or just doing the dishes) check your kneecaps.
Are you doing a Charlie Chaplin?
If so, fix it by assuming Mountain Pose and start to notice if you get relief from your sciatica pain.
