5 harsh truths about being “too out of shape for yoga” no one’s told you about (until now).
Redefined Yoga | JAN 5
This usually means “I don’t feel safe or stable in my body,” not that your body is broken or failing.
I hear this every week from people over 50 who assume they must first get flexible, lose weight, or “get stronger” before they’re allowed to start.
That belief is backwards.
I know because traditional yoga made my own back pain worse, even though I looked “fit” on the outside.
That experience is what pushed me to build Redefined Yoga, where strength and control come first, and flexibility is something you earn, not chase.

If your joints don’t feel supported, your nervous system stays on high alert, which is why stretching often feels stressful instead of helpful.
Action step: today, skip stretching.
If you feel steadier by the fifth rep, you just proved your body responds better to control than force.
Poses weren’t the problem; the order, intent, and lack of progression were.
Action step: choose one movement you already do daily (standing up, reaching, stepping back) and slow it down to half speed for one minute while staying smooth and quiet.
That’s yoga done correctly.
It tells us where stability is missing, where confidence is low, and where to begin without guessing.
Action step: ask yourself one simple question after moving—“Did that make me feel more stable or less?”
If the answer is “more,” you’re on the right path.
If a class leaves you sore, anxious, or afraid of the next session, something is off.
This is why my clients often say, “I finally feel safe to move again,” sometimes within the first week.
